Why Ag Product Differentiation Must Go Beyond the Active Ingredient

Why Ag Product Differentiation Must Go Beyond the Active Ingredient

It’s six on a spring morning. A grower stands beside the spray tank with two products promising similar results. One has a history of clumping during mixing. The other blends cleanly, every time. Remembering the hour lost last season clearing clogged nozzles, the grower reaches for the second jug.

Given past experience, the chemistry alone didn’t settle the decision. Other points of differentiation did, and they rarely make it onto the spec sheet.

The Question Behind Every Sale

Every agricultural product eventually has to answer one question: Why this one?

Efficacy earns a place in that conversation, but the deciding factor may be everything surrounding the chemistry: how a product stores, mixes, handles, and fits into a grower’s day.

That question becomes increasingly important as mature product categories face competition from similar chemistry, while emerging technologies must demonstrate their value within the practical realities of agricultural operations.

The science matters. But so does the experience.

Where the Value Gets Lost

The challenge isn’t always the innovation itself. Sometimes, it’s what happens between developing a product and bringing it to market.

When R&D, regulatory, product management, marketing, and sales operate independently, valuable opportunities for differentiation can be overlooked. Technical features reach commercial teams without a clear connection to the customer problems they could solve.

And a technically impressive product can end up with a surprisingly ordinary market story. What if some of agriculture’s most meaningful competitive advantages are hiding in the details we’ve learned to overlook?

That’s the thinking behind my upcoming executive report, Beyond the Active Ingredient: A Commercial Framework for Ag Product Differentiation. The report challenges conventional thinking about agricultural innovation and explores why manufacturers may need to look beyond the active ingredient to uncover new opportunities for differentiation.

The Conversation Starts Here

Before the report launches in November 2026, there’s one question worth asking: What frustrations have your customers simply learned to live with? Because sometimes, the next opportunity for meaningful innovation begins with a problem nobody thought to question.

Beyond the Active Ingredient: A Commercial Framework for Ag Product Differentiation launches November 2026.
